Gum tissue serves as a protective layer that covers the jawbone and the roots of the teeth. The gums and the underlying bone anchor the teeth in their place.
With healthy gums, the patient’s chances of problems is at a lower risk. Gum tissue in adults is susceptible to infection and inflammation caused by the bacteria that are commonly found in the mouth. This inflammation can lead to problems that include loss of the supporting bone and ultimately tooth loss. More recent research has linked gum health to certain systemic conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes.
Other factors, such as tobacco use, a heavy bite and genetic predisposition, can contribute to gum infection as well.
In diagnosing problems with the gums, periodontists use a number of techniques. Treatments vary from non-invasive therapies to outpatient surgical procedures.
Healthy gums are pink with no noticeable swelling, and they usually fully cover the roots of the teeth. Bleeding, redness and swelling indicates a problem with the gums and warrant a consultation with a periodontist. Other symptoms, such as pockets (diseased space) between the gums and the teeth or receding gums signal more advanced periodontal disease, which likely requires more intensive treatment.
Periodontists are dentists who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal (gum) disease. They have had extensive training with two additional years of study after dental school. As specialists, they devote their time, energy and skill to helping patients care for their gums. A periodontist is one of the eight dental specialists recognized by the American Dental Association.
